UCF Dominates in Ft. Myers!!

Mission Hockey Clinic, Ft. Myers, Nov 15, 2008

This past weekend 11/14-11/16 the UCF Roller Hockey Team traveled to the Skatium in Ft. Myers, FL.  There we competed in a regular season event in the South East Collegiate Roller Hockey League (www.SECRHL.org).  Our D1 team had 3 tough games while our B team played 4.  Our D1 team went 3-0 on the weekend to move us to 6-1 for the season.  The B team went 3-1 with an astonishing upset win over D2 University of South Florida.  They are now 5-3 on the season.

On Top of having an astonishing weekend for the organization as a whole; we also put on a free youth hockey clinic on Saturday 11/15.  This clinic was called the “Mission Hockey College” and is a nationwide project with the league’s national sanction NCRHA (www.NCRHA.org).  This year I was personally asked to head this event once again, and run the entire show.  With the assistance of my teammates and coaches we put on an outstanding clinic. There were over 50 youth players that attended, including 5 goalies.  I have attached some photos of the group and of our players instructing the youth athletes. The entire collection of photos (over 200) will be on our website shortly.

The kids who attended, were so ecstatic.  They arrived over an hour early and stayed all day to watch the college games.  It was such an honor for them to even be on the same rink as us college athletes.  Many of them asked for autographs and pictures with the college players.  During the clinic the kids were broken up into three different groups and rotated through stick handling, shooting, and skating drills.  The drills were composed of fun relay races and other activities that kept the kids interested while giving them the proper instruction on skills.

This was yet another great experience for the UCF Roller Hockey Team.  It was a remarkable achievement for us to be able to give back to the community and be able to spread the game of roller hockey.  Our players were honored to be asked to host this event, and are looking forward to hosting a few more Mission Hockey College events this season.
