Heartbreaking Finish in Philly

Team Huddle
With an extraordinary year and major accomplishments, both teams were viciously anxious for this year’s national championships. Thanks to a coach bus donated by Mears transportation, the team headed to the airport early Wednesday morning with ease. After checking in it was a long bumpy ride up north. Once finally landed the teams anticipation to play grew even stronger. Thankfully the team had a skate that Wednesday night, to get used to the surface and rink. Both teams looked great and were ready to dangle in our upcoming games.

The D1’s first game was against North Texas. It was obvious that the knights came to play with an impressive 10-1 victory. The B team’s first matchup was against powerhouse UMSL, and they unfortunately had a close loss. The next game was D1 vs. Mizzou. This game was full of penalties, which ultimately controlled the outcome. The knights lost their first playoff game of the year in a 5-2 loss. The B team came back strong with an astonishing 13-0 shutout against Texas Arlington. The next morning the D1 Knights got a rematch against Buffalo. Once again hindered by penalties the knights had their 2nd loss in pool play. The B team also lost their last game in pool play, to West Chester. It would now be up to the seeding meeting to decide both teams’ future.

The D1 squad faced Regional Champion Colorado State in the first round. Realizing it was do or die, the Knights came out on fire and was victorious with a 10-4 final. That was until the Red Army came along, better known as the University of Missouri St. Louis or UMSL Tritons. UMSL was the team that knocked the knights out in the semi finals at last year’s national championship event. This year was different though, the game was neck and neck. After the first period it remained scoreless. UMSL struck first with a power play goal. The knights quickly returned with a power play goal from star Connor Cafferty. The second period ended with UMSL up 2-1 with the knights on the door step of tying the game. Unfortunately, in this battle, the infamous “Red Army” held off the Knights and claimed the victory. UMSL went on to win the national championship with an amazing upset against 7 time defending national champions, Lindenwood University. The D1 team made a strong run and ended up making the sweet 16. Next year the team is preparing for some strong additions and another final four appearance.

The B team also had a strong run through the playoffs. Their first game was against UC Santa Barbara, and they showed those Californians what Florida hockey is all about; with a 7-3 victory. In the quarter finals the B team got a chance to make up for a round robin loss with a rematch against UMSL. This time not letting anything get in their way, the knights B team won 9-6. The team was lead by Junior Jason Crook who had an impressive 4 goal game. Advancing on to the Semi Finals, the Knights now faced East Coast powerhouse Penn State. This was a rough match-up and the knights were exhausted from a long run through the tournament. They dropped this game, but finished the tournament with a back to back final four appearance. The B team will be looking to make a 3 peat next year with yet another final four appearance, and the help of a strong incoming freshman class.

The experiences and friendships created through this season will last a lifetime. For a lot of players this is the final level of competitive hockey they will play. Upon growing older and achieving great success in the business world, it is hoped that this hockey organization is a staple in their college memories.

On the Road to Nationals, UCF Gives Back…

UCF Hockey Nationals

After a snowy weekend in Atlanta, it was time to forget about the past and look to the future. The regular season is history and it all comes down to the biggest tournament of the year, The NCRHA National Championships. The playoff beards started, treadmills brought out of storage, and the jocks and socks stay unwashed!! After the regional championship event we had one practice and then the all infamous “Spring Break.” With players traveling all over the world, and doing things many wouldn’t approve, the team would have to work extra hard upon their return. With practices doubled, exhibition games scheduled, and plenty of “chalk talk” everyone got right back into things. Players looked back on previous losses and worked on trying to tweak things so that this would not be repeated.

Even with such a massive tournament coming up, everyone still needs to have a little fun. First off the entire team participated in the UCF Relay for Life. For anyone unfamiliar with this event, it is a tremendous, nationwide fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. This was the second consecutive year in attendance, and plan on attending for every year in the future. On top of being present at the Relay for Life event, there is a floor hockey challenge set up as an additional fundraiser. The event is called “Clash of the Titans” and is a Floor Hockey game that the UCF Roller Team will be challenging the UCF Ice Team. Entrance is free for anyone, and it is taking place at the UCF Gym Saturday March 28th at 6pm.

In the past the team put on a few free youth clinics in partnership with the league and with Mission Hockey. This time they went out on their own and put on a clinic for the local community and city of Orlando. It was a great success, and was also an excellent marketing campaign. Lastly, with an entire season of everyone bonding on and around the rink, it was finally time to do some quality team building off the rink as well. Paintball was the majority vote, and after an amazing night it is understandable why. With a few welts and dirt covered bodies, the night was just another memory to add to the scrap book. It is definitely something that will be included in the schedule for the seasons to come.

Both teams will be leaving on the morning of Wednesday April 1st for nationals. While at the tournament please check our web site and www.slammhockey.com for daily blog updates. The scores can be found on our site or live at www.NCRHA.org. Please take a look at all the new pictures added and our new sponsor’s web site, Chamba Hockey.

BACK TO BACK!!!

Amidst being stuck in the middle of Atlanta’s 2nd worst snow storm in history, the UCF Knights won the South East Regional Championships. Entering the tournament as the top seed, the knights had an easy run through the weekend. The first game was against East Carolina and it started off a little rough. That didn’t last long, with a blow out win of 9 to 4. The next game was against NC State who had beaten us the first game of the season. We wanted payback, and demolished them with a 12-2 final. This win was done so with the help of sophomore Connor Cafferty who had 7 pts in the game.

Winning both of these games gave us the top seed entering into the playoffs. We found ourselves playing NC State again in the Semi Final game, and it was just a recap from the day before. Once again an astonishing 4 point performance by Connor Cafferty, with the nicest of his goals being an Ovechkin style goal from the ground. It was so impressive players from the other team were complimenting him. After a short break, we met our arch rivals, The Florida Gators. This game started off unpleasant with Florida scoring on their first shift. But it all ended there, we then came out flying and scored 7 unanswered goals to take the lead 7-1. This was done so with the help of senior and veteran Brandon Reich who had 4 points including 2 amazing snipes. The final was 8 to 5 and we were crowned the South East Regional Champions.

This is the 8th D1 regional championship title UCF has won in the past 12 years. The B team has also won the regional championship this year to help fulfill the back to back wins in both divisions. Both teams are now headed to Philadelphia, PA for the national championships April 1st through the 5th.

The team also has a few marketing and fundraising events coming up. On March 20th the whole organization will be participating in the UCF Relay for Life, where the team will walk laps in honor of cancer patients, survivors, and victims. As a fundraiser for this event, the team has challenged the Ice Hockey Club to a game of Intramural Floor Hockey at the UCF gym. This will be a huge event on March. 28th at 6pm, and should be lots of fun.  Lastly, we will be doing a free youth clinic for local kids in the Orlando area on March 21st. The Knights are planning on finishing the season strong and hoping to again have two final four finishes at this year’s national championships.

Both teams finish the regular season in 1st place!!!

With a blistering three weeks finally coming to an end, the UCF Roller Hockey Organization has done it again. Both the D1 and the B team finished the regular season in 1st place. This is a great accomplishment for our organization, and it has only been made possible by your support. Our spring semester started off strong with intense practices and exhibition games. Our games this semester started off in the state’s capital of Tallahassee, FL. There the D1 team had 2 games against in state rival University of Florida. We were able to come out on top of these matches and finished the weekend 4 and 0. These wins against strong D1 teams proved our status in the region, and showed that we did deserve the 1st place standing we had. The D1 team also faced in town rival Valencia Community College, and got the job done with a 9-2 finish. In Tallahassee our B team also had a few grueling games. Since there are only 3 teams in the B division, our B team also plays teams from Division 2. This weekend our B team matched up with Florida State and undefeated Florida Atlantic from D2. Unfortunately they were unable to defeat these two teams, but put up a great showing considering what they were up against. Also in Tallahassee our B team played the two other B teams, Florida International and Florida, and beat both of them with flying colors.

After a tough weekend in Tallahassee, we came back and had one practice and then our D1 team left to Pittsburgh, PA. This trip was made possible by the amazing fundraiser we ran, and the support you have given us. In Pittsburgh we faced four of the top teams in the country. Our first game was against the University of Buffalo Wings. This game was a unfortunate wake up for us, and proved that we still had a lot of work to do. Further into the weekend we played Penn State. This game was a close matchup, which could have gone either way. With a bounce or two favoring Penn State, we lost our second game in a row. This was the first time this season that we had lost two games in a row and it was something that opened all of our players eyes. That night we had team meetings and discussed a few things that we needed to tweak and perfect so that we could turn things around and get back to the status and level we had been playing at, at the beginning of the season. The following morning we took on University of Pittsburgh, and finally got our first win of the weekend. It was still not an impressive showing by our powerhouse team, but our tweaking did get us the win. The final game of the weekend was against University of Michigan. This was our best game of the weekend although penalties hindered us to playing to our maximum potential. The first period ended scoreless, with Michigan capitalizing first, halfway through the second period. Freshman Joey LaRocco then came back and tied it up. Sitting at a dead heat, we then had the game backbreaker, and Michigan scored a shorthanded goal. This was just the icing on the cake and broke us down mentally. Throughout the game, rookie goalie Dan Moon, stood on his head denying Michigan on almost every attempt they had. He kept the game close which easily could have gotten out of hand. We finished with the loss of 3-1 with Michigan scoring a late empty net goal. We came home for the first time with a losing record from the weekend, and new that we all had a long week of practice ahead of us to get prepared for the following event.

Just a week after our long trip, both teams traveled to Ft. Myers, FL for our last regular season event. The D1 team had their opening game vs Florida International, and hoped to turn things around. Starting off strong we went up 2-0 with goals from Captain Jeff Cohen, and Asisistant Captain Brandon Reich. Then things took a turn for the worst, and we fell short with a 5-3 loss, including an empty net goal. The following game was against undefeated D2 Florida Atlantic. Things once again started off not looking good. We went down early 3-0, and many people thought that this was the downfall and end of our organization. After an inspiration mid period speech, we finally found our will and desire. With a stunning 2nd and 3rd period we came back to win 4-3. We had four unanswered goals in the game, and gave Florida Atlantic their only loss, and ruined their perfect season. After this fantastic game and turnaround of our team, we played Florida International again, and we wanted some payback. This time we didn’t make any mistake, and defeated them 11-3 proving that they had no business even being on the same rink as us. With both of these wins we clinched our 1st place seed in the South East Conference. Our B team also competed in Ft. Myers, and also clinched their 1st place seed for the region. They tied tough D2 University of Miami, and showed that even though they are a B team, they can still play with the big dogs. The B team also beat both B teams once again, which gave them an undefeated record against all B teams.

Also in Ft. Myers I, Jeff Cohen, headed a huge free youth clinic, with the assistance of fellow UCF players. This clinic is called the Mission Hockey College, and is a fantastic event the league is doing. I had over 50 local youth players at the event, and every one of them was so thankful to have us instructing them. All the youth players were asking for autographs, and couldn’t believe they were on the same rink with actual College Hockey Players. This event not only helps instruct the youth on how to improve on their skills, but it also gives the kids something great to look forward to, and another reason to further their education. Now with the regular season finished, it is all practice and hard work for the playoffs and post season games. Our D1 team will be competing in Snellville, GA at the South East Regional Championships. This event will take place the weekend of February 27th, and we are hoping to repeat and take the title home. A win at this event will guarantee our spot for nationals, giving us not only an auto bid but also the league will cover our entry fee. Since there are only three B teams in the region, there is no regional championship event for this division. This means that the UCF B team is once again the South Eastern Regional Champions. This is a repeat from last season, and the UCF B team has an auto bid to the National Championships in Feasterville, PA in April.

Please see the photos page for pictures from the past events. I also have a few sweaters and T shirts still available for sale for anyone who is interested, you may email me for prices and images.

UCF Has an Astonishing Fall Semester

With the fall semester coming to a close, the UCF Knights are heading home for the holidays ranked 5th in the nation!!! National Rankings The fall semester was filled with a demanding practice and game schedule. Tough scrimmages, along with community volunteer events filled our calendars. The D1 team had a great run through the semester finishing 6-1. The only loss was in the opening game of the season, which they bounced back from very quickly and demolished teams in the other 3 games of that event. From there the D1 team went to Ft. Myers, FL and manhandled teams with 3-0 finish. Look for a few big upcoming games in the spring semester. The weekend of Jan 24th the knights will be traveling to Beachton, GA where we will most likely play the 6th ranked University of Florida Gators. This will be our biggest regional game of the year. On top of this at the end of January the Knights are also traveling to Pittsburgh for a massive inter regional event where at least 5 of the top 10 teams will be present. This trip has been made possible by the amazing fundraiser the team ran called “My Sports Dreams.” To date the team has raised over $7,500 in profits. On top of all these accomplishment the Knights B team has also made a name for themselves. Ranked 1st in the Southeast Region, the Knights B team has even upset D2 teams this year. With the addition of two new players to both teams, this spring semester should be an even better showing for the organization. The Knights are shooting for a repeat this year with a D1 and B Regional Championship, along with a final four finish from both teams at nationals. A brand new order has arrived for sweaters and shirts, please contact the team at ucrollerhockey@gmail.com for pictures and pricing. (WE HAVE LARGE SIZES NOW!!!!!)

UCF Dominates in Ft. Myers!!

Mission Hockey Clinic, Ft. Myers, Nov 15, 2008

This past weekend 11/14-11/16 the UCF Roller Hockey Team traveled to the Skatium in Ft. Myers, FL.  There we competed in a regular season event in the South East Collegiate Roller Hockey League (www.SECRHL.org).  Our D1 team had 3 tough games while our B team played 4.  Our D1 team went 3-0 on the weekend to move us to 6-1 for the season.  The B team went 3-1 with an astonishing upset win over D2 University of South Florida.  They are now 5-3 on the season.

On Top of having an astonishing weekend for the organization as a whole; we also put on a free youth hockey clinic on Saturday 11/15.  This clinic was called the “Mission Hockey College” and is a nationwide project with the league’s national sanction NCRHA (www.NCRHA.org).  This year I was personally asked to head this event once again, and run the entire show.  With the assistance of my teammates and coaches we put on an outstanding clinic. There were over 50 youth players that attended, including 5 goalies.  I have attached some photos of the group and of our players instructing the youth athletes. The entire collection of photos (over 200) will be on our website shortly.

The kids who attended, were so ecstatic.  They arrived over an hour early and stayed all day to watch the college games.  It was such an honor for them to even be on the same rink as us college athletes.  Many of them asked for autographs and pictures with the college players.  During the clinic the kids were broken up into three different groups and rotated through stick handling, shooting, and skating drills.  The drills were composed of fun relay races and other activities that kept the kids interested while giving them the proper instruction on skills.

This was yet another great experience for the UCF Roller Hockey Team.  It was a remarkable achievement for us to be able to give back to the community and be able to spread the game of roller hockey.  Our players were honored to be asked to host this event, and are looking forward to hosting a few more Mission Hockey College events this season.

Rolling 101

For the first time ever, the league hosted the Mission Hockey College, which provided a free clinic for children between the ages of 5 and 15 to learn more about the basics of roller hockey, Jeff Cohen, a junior player at UCF, said. The three-hour clinic was completely booked a month in advance. The players worked with children with a wide range of skill levels and gave them an opportunity to learn.
